Steel cap or composite toe?
Both pass the same AS/NZS 2210.3 tests: a 200-joule impact and a 15 kN compression load on the toe cap. Steel caps are the traditional choice and are thinner for the same protection, so they usually leave more room for your toes. Composite caps are non-metallic: lighter, they don’t conduct heat or cold, and they won’t set off metal detectors — useful in airports, security screening and some warehouses.

Extra protection for specific jobs
-
Metatarsal guard — protects the top of the foot from dropped loads in mining and heavy industry: Steel Blue Argyle® Met 342802. More in our mining boots guide.
-
Electrical hazard (EH) sole — secondary protection against accidental contact with live circuits for electricians; it doesn’t replace safe isolation: Steel Blue Torquay EH 827539.
-
Penetration-resistant sole — stops nails and sharp debris coming through the sole on demolition and framing jobs: uvex 3 X-Flow P Zip.
-
Scuff cap — a rubber or TPU cover over the toe that protects the leather when you kneel: tilers, plumbers and concreters wear through toes fastest.
-
Waterproof — for wet sites, wash-down areas and outdoor work: see our waterproof boots guide.
-
Slip resistance — look for SRC on the sole or spec sheet: what SRC means.
Safety shoes, joggers and gumboots
Not every job needs a boot. Safety shoes and joggers suit warehouses, logistics and factory floors — see safety shoes, composite toe shoes, the Blundstone Safety Joggers #795 and our warehouse footwear guide. For wet work, wash-down, concrete and food processing, choose a safety gumboot such as the Bata Jobmaster 3 or Blundstone #024 — all safety gumboots.
Women’s safety boots
Women’s safety boots are built on a women’s last, with a narrower heel and forefoot, rather than simply being smaller sizes. Options include the Steel Blue Parkes Zip Ladies 512758 and Blundstone Women’s Rotoflex #9961. Browse women’s steel cap boots or read our women’s safety boots guide.
Getting the fit right
- Try boots on later in the day, wearing the socks you’ll work in.
- Allow about a thumb’s width between your longest toe and the end of the boot — your toes shouldn’t touch the toe cap.
- Wide feet, flat feet or foot pain? Read how to choose safety boots for wide or flat feet.
- Replace boots when the tread is worn smooth, the sole is separating, the toe cap is exposed, or after a heavy impact on the toe.
