Which steel cap safety boot should you buy in Sydney? There is no single best boot: choose the toe cap and style that suit the job, check the listing states AS 2210.3, then pick a brand and a fit. This guide sorts the boots we stock by brand, using each listing's own details, and explains the markings that matter.

What should a safety boot meet in Australia?
Safety footwear is covered by AS 2210.3:2019 (Personal protective equipment, Part 3: Safety footwear), which replaced AS/NZS 2210.3:2009. Several listings above still cite the 2009 edition, so check which edition a listing states if your site specifies one. AS/NZS 2210.1:2025 is the companion guide to selection, care and use.
For slippery floors, SafeWork NSW says a PCBU must ensure suitable PPE is worn when it is identified as a control, such as non-slip footwear for wet, oily, dusty or icy environments, and points to AS 2210.3:2019 for slip-resistance requirements.
Steel cap or composite toe?
Both are used for the same job. KingGee's Phoenix 6CZ EH listing says its composite cap gives the same 200 joule protection as steel under AS/NZS 2210.3:2009, is non-conductive and is up to 30% lighter. Composite caps are non-metallic, which Steel Blue's listings describe as airport friendly, handy for FIFO and other workers who pass through security often.
- Steel Blue: the Argyle® Zip Composite 317532 swaps the steel cap for a lightweight, non-metallic one.
- Hard Yakka: the X Range Mid has a composite cap that its listing says is 50% lighter than steel, and a running shoe style build.
- KingGee: the ONYX 6CZ pairs a composite toe with an ankle flex mechanism and an SRC outsole.
Zip-side, lace-up or elastic-sided?
- Zip-side boots let you tie the laces once for fit, then zip in and out. Examples: the Steel Blue Argyle® Zip, the Mongrel ZipSider 261050, the KingGee Tradie Zip/Lace and the Oliver 55-385.
- Lace-up boots give you the most to adjust across the foot and ankle. The Hard Yakka Toughmaxx 6Z is a lace-up with a quick release side zip.
- Elastic-sided boots are the quickest to pull on, with less to adjust at the ankle. Examples: the Blundstone Rotoflex #9000, the Mongrel 240020 and the Redback Bobcat.
Which boot suits which job?
- Wide feet: the Hard Yakka Utility is built on Hard Yakka's wide fit mould, and the Blundstone #310 has a Chelsea cut with extra room for wide feet. See our guide to choosing boots for flat feet, wide feet or foot pain.
- Flat feet: Mongrel's listing for the 240020 says its OrthoTec Lite footbed has less arch support than OrthoTec Air, so it better suits flat feet.
- Heat: the Mongrel 561050, the KingGee ONYX 6CZ and the Oliver 55-385 list outsoles heat resistant to 300°C.
- Electrical work: the Blundstone Rotoflex #9000, the Steel Blue Torquay EH and the KingGee Phoenix 6CZ EH state electrical hazard ratings. KingGee's listing adds that EH footwear should not be the primary source of protection in an electrical hazard environment.
- Women's fit: the Oliver 49-445Z, the Steel Blue Southern Cross® Zip Ladies 512761 and the Blundstone Women's Rotoflex #9961 are cut for women's feet. See our women's safety boots guide.
What do SRC and EH mean on a boot?
SRC is a slip rating: the sole has been tested on ceramic tile with sodium laureth sulfate solution and on steel with glycerine. It matters on wet or oily floors. Our guide to what an SRC rating actually means explains how to read it.
EH means electrical hazard. Steel Blue's listings describe an EH sole as secondary protection against accidental contact with live electrical circuits, and one that meets ASTM F2413 Clause 5.6.
How do I get the right size?
Start with your usual Australian size, try boots on later in the day with work socks, and allow about a thumb's width in front of your longest toe. Each brand cuts a little differently, so check its size guide: Steel Blue, Blundstone, Mongrel, Hard Yakka and KingGee. The size run is on every listing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best steel cap safety boot for Sydney tradies?
There is no single best boot: it depends on the job, the fit and your site's rules. Zip-side boots such as the Steel Blue Argyle Zip, Mongrel ZipSider and KingGee Tradie Zip/Lace suit people who pull their boots on and off through the day, and elastic-sided boots such as the Blundstone Rotoflex #9000 and Redback Bobcat are quicker still. Use the table above to compare the models we stock.
What standard should safety boots meet in Australia?
Look for AS 2210.3:2019, the current edition of the standard for safety footwear, which replaced AS/NZS 2210.3:2009. Some listings still cite the 2009 edition, so check which edition a listing states if your site specifies one.
Is a steel toe or a composite toe better?
Neither is better for every job. KingGee's Phoenix 6CZ EH listing says its composite cap gives the same 200 joule protection as steel under AS/NZS 2210.3:2009. Composite caps are non-metallic, which Steel Blue's listings describe as airport friendly. Choose by the job and your site's rules.
Can I wear zip-side or elastic-sided boots on site?
Check your site's or employer's PPE rules before you buy, because they decide which boot styles are allowed. We list zip-side, lace-up and elastic-sided boots that state AS 2210.3 or AS/NZS 2210.3.
What does SRC mean on a safety boot?
SRC is a slip rating. The sole has been tested on ceramic tile with sodium laureth sulfate solution and on steel with glycerine. It matters most on wet or oily floors.
Which safety boots suit wide or flat feet?
The Hard Yakka Utility is built on Hard Yakka's wide fit mould, and the Blundstone #310 has a Chelsea cut with extra room for wide feet. Mongrel's listing for the 240020 says its footbed has less arch support than OrthoTec Air, so it better suits flat feet. Feet differ, so check the size guide for the brand you choose.
Where can I check boot sizes in person in Sydney?
Call 0457 545 175 first, then visit the counter at 79 St Hilliers Road, Auburn, Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 3:30pm (excluding public holidays). It is handy for checking boot sizes in person.
