Not every welding job needs the same eye protection, and using the wrong shade for the task leaves you genuinely exposed to arc flash or radiation burn. Every welding filter on this page is rated to AS/NZS 1338.1, Australia's standard for welding filter shade numbers. As a guide: arc welding, MIG and TIG need a darker shade (typically 9–13) delivered through an auto-darkening helmet, while shade 5 fixed-tint glasses are the correct choice for oxy-fuel welding, cutting and brazing, and for anyone standing as a bystander within the welding zone. Auto-darkening helmets are not suitable for gas welding — the shade settings simply aren't designed for it.
