The hi-vis shirt is the base of almost every site uniform in Australia, and the garment most likely to be replaced on wear rather than on failure. Everything here is made to AS/NZS 4602.1, with retroreflective taping to AS/NZS 1906.4 on the day/night styles — so the real choice comes down to class, sleeve and fabric.

Class D, Class N or D/N

• Class D — fluorescent fabric only, no tape. Daylight work in a yard or warehouse.
• Class N — retroreflective tape without a fluorescent background. Night use.
• Class D/N — both, and what most construction, civil, mining and traffic control sites specify.

Fabric Matters More Than People Expect

• Cotton drill — heaviest and most durable, best for abrasion and hot work. Slowest to dry.
• Lightweight cotton and ripstop — the summer option: breathable, and ripstop stops a snag turning into a tear.
• Polyester and cotton-backed polyester — holds fluorescent colour longest through industrial laundering and dries fastest, but breathes less.

Fluorescent dye fades, and a faded shirt is a non-compliant shirt even when the tape is intact. Whatever the fabric, judge a hi-vis shirt's remaining life on the background colour, not on the state of the seams.
