Hi-Vis Shirts for Construction Sites – Long & Short Sleeve

On a construction site your shirt is PPE. It has to meet AS/NZS 4602.1 for the conditions you work in — Class D for daylight only, or Class D/N with retroreflective tape for any work at dawn, dusk, night or around headlights — and it has to be cool enough to keep on all shift. Below are the hi-vis shirts and polos we stock from Bisley, DNC, Hard Yakka, Syzmik, KingGee and JB’s, grouped by class, all available for delivery Australia-wide or collection from Auburn NSW by arrangement.

Pick the class before the shirt

  • Class D (day only): fluorescent fabric, no tape. For daytime work away from traffic and mobile plant at night. Cheaper and cooler.
  • Class D/N (day and night): fluorescent fabric plus retroreflective tape to AS/NZS 1906.4. Required wherever any part of the shift is in low light — roads, rail, early starts, night shifts.
  • Long sleeves for sun protection (look for UPF 50+) and for sites that mandate them; short sleeves for covered or indoor work.
  • Your site or client PPE matrix overrides all of the above — check it first. Unsure of the ratings? Read our guide to Class D, N and D/N.

Cotton drill or polyester polo?

  • 100% cotton drill (155–190 gsm): breathable, UPF 50+ across the DNC range, and DNC states its metal-free cotton garments suit electrical and gas trades. Heavier and slower to dry.
  • Polyester micromesh polos (160–175 gsm): lightest and quickest drying; keep them away from hot work and welding.
  • Ventilated shirts — Bisley Cool Lightweight and X Airflow, DNC Cool-Breeze, Hard Yakka Vented, Syzmik Rugged Cooling — put mesh at the back yoke and underarms for summer.
  • Company logos: embroidery or screen printing on bulk orders — ask for a quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Class D or Class D/N?

Class D/N whenever any part of the shift is in low light or around vehicle headlights; Class D for daylight-only work. Most road, rail and civil sites specify D/N outright — check the site PPE matrix.

Are long sleeves required on construction sites?

AS/NZS 4602.1 does not set sleeve length, but many builders require long sleeves for sun protection. A UPF 50+ cotton drill or ventilated long sleeve is the usual answer.

Which shirts are suitable for rail work?

Those the maker labels for it: DNC lists the 3545 and women’s 3544 as NSW Rail compliant, and Bisley notes the Aus Rail requirements on the BS6166XT. Confirm against the network’s own standard before ordering.

Can you add our company logo?

Yes — embroidery or screen printing on bulk orders. Send the artwork and quantities through the contact page for a quote.
