Hi-vis buying guide — Day, Night and Day/Night, tape, garments and replacement

Day, Night or Day/Night?

You may also see “Class F”. That isn’t a garment class — it’s the fluorescent fabric classification under AS/NZS 1906.4. Your site PPE rules or traffic management plan set the class you need; our guide to Class D, N and D/N explains the difference.

Tape patterns and rail work

Reflective tape usually runs in an H pattern over the back, an X (cross-back) pattern, or hoops around the body, arms and legs. Rail networks often specify their own tape pattern and colour — for example the Syzmik VIC Rail 2 in 1 Softshell Jacket ZJ780 and the Bisley X Taped Cool Lightweight Shirt BS6166XT, which has an X-back tape pattern and a Rail Orange colour option. Check your network’s or principal contractor’s spec before you order.

Choosing by garment

Women’s hi-vis

Women’s cuts fit better through the shoulders, waist and hips than unisex sizing — for example the DNC Women’s Two Tone Cotton Drill Shirt 3932, in sizes 8 to 24. Browse women’s shirts, jackets & vests and pants.

When to replace hi-vis

Sun and washing fade fluorescent colour, and reflective tape cracks and peels over time. Replace a garment when the colour has visibly faded, the tape is damaged or missing, or it’s torn or heavily soiled — a worn-out garment may no longer meet its class. Follow the care label on each garment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between Class D, Class N and Class D/N hi-vis?

Class D is for daytime use and relies on fluorescent fabric. Class N is for night and low light and relies on retroreflective tape. Class D/N combines both in one garment.

Is Class F a hi-vis garment class?

No. Class F is the fluorescent fabric classification under AS/NZS 1906.4. Garments are classed D, N or D/N under AS/NZS 4602.1.

Do I need Day/Night hi-vis?

Choose Day/Night if any of your work happens at night, at dawn or dusk, or in low light. Your site PPE rules or traffic management plan will say which class is required.

When should hi-vis workwear be replaced?

When the fluorescent colour has faded, the reflective tape is cracked, peeling or missing, or the garment is torn or heavily soiled.

Which hi-vis brands do you stock?

DNC, Bisley, Portwest, Syzmik, JB’s, KingGee and Hard Yakka, in men’s, women’s and unisex sizing.

Can you add custom embroidery to hi-vis workwear?

Yes. We offer custom embroidery on hi-vis workwear — contact our Sydney team with your logo and quantities for a quote.
