Safety boot buying guide — toe caps, styles, ratings and fit
Steel cap or composite toe?
Both pass the same AS/NZS 2210.3 tests: a 200-joule impact and a 15 kN compression load on the toe cap. Steel caps are the traditional choice and are thinner for the same protection, so they usually leave more room for your toes. Composite caps are non-metallic: lighter, they don’t conduct heat or cold, and they won’t set off metal detectors — useful in airports, security screening and some warehouses.
- Steel Blue Argyle® Zip Composite 317532 — composite toe, zip-side.
- KingGee ONYX 6CZ Composite Toe K28000 — composite toe, sizes 3 to 16.
- Hard Yakka X Range Mid Composite Toe Y60363 — light, sports-style composite boot.
- Blundstone Rotoflex #8553 — composite toe, also rated for electrical hazard.
Lace-up, zip-side or elastic-sided?
- Lace-up gives the firmest ankle support and the most adjustable fit — e.g. the Mongrel Black Oil Kip Lace Up 260020 with a 200-joule steel toe cap. Shop lace-up boots.
- Zip-side boots are laced once to fit, then zipped on and off — popular with tradies who are in and out of boots all day. See the Steel Blue Parkes Zip Scuff Cap 312658 and our zip-side guide.
- Elastic-sided (pull-on) boots have no laces to snag and are the quickest to put on, but give less ankle support. Some construction and mine sites require lace-up or zip-sided boots, so check your site rules. Try the Blundstone #310.
Extra protection for specific jobs
- Metatarsal guard — protects the top of the foot from dropped loads in mining and heavy industry: Steel Blue Argyle® Met 342802. More in our mining boots guide.
- Electrical hazard (EH) sole — secondary protection against accidental contact with live circuits for electricians; it doesn’t replace safe isolation: Steel Blue Torquay EH 827539.
- Penetration-resistant sole — stops nails and sharp debris coming through the sole on demolition and framing jobs: uvex 3 X-Flow P Zip.
- Scuff cap — a rubber or TPU cover over the toe that protects the leather when you kneel: tilers, plumbers and concreters wear through toes fastest.
- Waterproof — for wet sites, wash-down areas and outdoor work: see our waterproof boots guide.
- Slip resistance — look for SRC on the sole or spec sheet: what SRC means.
Safety shoes, joggers and gumboots
Not every job needs a boot. Safety shoes and joggers suit warehouses, logistics and factory floors — see safety shoes, composite toe shoes, the Blundstone Safety Joggers #795 and our warehouse footwear guide. For wet work, wash-down, concrete and food processing, choose a safety gumboot such as the Bata Jobmaster 3 or Blundstone #024 — all safety gumboots.
Women’s safety boots
Women’s safety boots are built on a women’s last, with a narrower heel and forefoot, rather than simply being smaller sizes. Options include the Steel Blue Parkes Zip Ladies 512758 and Blundstone Women’s Rotoflex #9961. Browse women’s steel cap boots or read our women’s safety boots guide.
Getting the fit right
- Try boots on later in the day, wearing the socks you’ll work in.
- Allow about a thumb’s width between your longest toe and the end of the boot — your toes shouldn’t touch the toe cap.
- Wide feet, flat feet or foot pain? Read how to choose safety boots for wide or flat feet.
- Replace boots when the tread is worn smooth, the sole is separating, the toe cap is exposed, or after a heavy impact on the toe.

Frequently Asked Questions
What standard should safety boots meet in Australia?
Safety footwear is certified to AS/NZS 2210.3 — the current edition is AS 2210.3:2019 — which includes a 200-joule toe cap impact test. A few non-safety work boots and gumboots are also listed in this collection and say “non-safety” in the product name.
Is a steel cap or composite toe safer?
Neither — both pass the same AS/NZS 2210.3 impact and compression tests. Composite toes are lighter, don’t conduct heat or cold and won’t set off metal detectors; steel caps are thinner and usually leave more toe room.
Can I wear elastic-sided boots on site?
Many sites allow them, but some construction and mine sites require lace-up or zip-sided boots for ankle support. Check your site’s PPE rules before you buy.
What does SRC mean on a safety boot?
SRC means the sole has passed both slip tests: ceramic tile with a soap solution (SRA) and steel with glycerol (SRB). It’s the rating to look for if you move between wet and oily floors.
What size safety boot should I buy?
Start with your usual Australian shoe size, try boots on later in the day with work socks, and allow about a thumb’s width in front of your longest toe. Your toes shouldn’t touch the toe cap.
