Respiratory Protection – P2 Masks, Respirators & Gas Masks

Airborne hazards — silica dust, asbestos fibres, chemical vapours, welding fume — don't announce themselves, which is exactly why the right respiratory protection matters before exposure, not after. Every respirator and mask on this page is manufactured to AS/NZS 1716, Australia's respiratory protective device standard, and selected according to AS/NZS 1715 guidance on fit and use. Particulate protection is rated P1 to P3 — P2 is the minimum specified for silica dust and asbestos work in Australia, while P3 is the highest rating, achieved only with a full-face respirator or PAPR.

Explore Our Range — Half-Face, Full-Face, PAPR & Disposable

  • Half-Face Respirators — reusable, cost-effective protection up to P2 level, with replaceable cartridges for dust, organic vapours, welding fume and general construction work. Compatible with combination cartridges (e.g. A2P2) where both particulate and gas/vapour hazards are present.
  • Full-Face Respirators — complete face coverage for the highest hazard environments, one of only two mask types (with PAPR) capable of full P3 particulate protection, and the standard choice for asbestos, chemical and acid vapour work.
  • Disposable P2/P3 Masks — single-use particulate respirators for lighter, intermittent dust exposure where a reusable cartridge respirator isn't necessary. Under AS/NZS 1715 a disposable P3 is credited as P2 protection.
  • PAPR (Powered Air Purifying Respirators) — battery-powered positive-pressure systems that push filtered air to a hood, helmet or mask. No face-fit required, making them the right choice for beards, prescription glasses, or extended high-exposure tasks.
  • Asbestos & Silica-Specific Kits — pre-matched mask and filter combinations (Sundström SR100 ranges) for asbestos removal and silica dust work, so you're not guessing which filter pairs with which mask.
  • Gas & Vapour Cartridges — organic vapour (A), inorganic gas (B), acid gas (E) and ammonia (K) filters, including combination ABEK1-rated cartridges for multi-hazard environments.

Choosing the Right Respirator for Asbestos, Silica & Chemical Work

Not sure what mask you need for asbestos or silica dust? As a general guide: P2 is the minimum rating specified for both, with full-face respirators preferred over half-face where eye and face protection from irritant dust is also needed. For chemical vapours and spraying work, match the cartridge letter code to the hazard rather than assuming any filter will do — an A-rated organic vapour cartridge does not protect against acid gases, and vice versa.

Frequently Asked Questions

P1 offers the lowest particulate filtration, suited to nuisance dust. P2 is the minimum rating specified for silica dust and asbestos work in Australia. P3 is the highest particulate rating, but under AS/NZS 1715 full P3 protection is only achieved with a full-face respirator or a powered air purifying respirator (PAPR). A P3 disposable, or a P3 filter on a half-face mask, is credited as P2.

A minimum P2-rated respirator is required for asbestos work, with full-face respirators generally preferred over half-face for the added eye and face protection. Pre-matched asbestos/silica kits pair the correct mask and filter combination for you.

The same P2 minimum applies to silica dust as to asbestos — a genuine compliance concern given current Australian regulation around engineered stone and concrete cutting work. Full-face or half-face respirators with a P2 or P3 filter are both suitable depending on your task.

Half-face respirators cover the nose and mouth only and provide up to P2 protection. Full-face respirators cover the entire face, add eye protection from irritant dust and vapours, and — along with powered air purifying respirators (PAPR) — are the only mask types capable of full P3 particulate protection.

Yes — every full-face respirator on this page is a genuine AS/NZS 1716 certified respiratory protective device for occupational use, fitted with the correct particulate or gas/vapour cartridge for your hazard, not a costume or novelty item.
