Safety harnesses and fall protection equipment

Full-body harnesses, energy-absorbing lanyards, self-retracting lanyards, anchors, connectors and rescue gear from Skylotec, 3M (Protecta and DBI-SALA), MSA and Maxisafe, for construction, roofing, rigging, mining, utilities and confined space work. In Australia, harnesses and lanyards are made to AS/NZS 1891.1, fall-arrest devices such as self-retracting lanyards to AS/NZS 1891.3, and selection, use and maintenance are covered by AS/NZS 1891.4. Check each listing for its AS/NZS 1891 rating before you buy for a site.

Restraint or fall arrest?

  • Total restraint — the worker is tethered so they can’t reach the edge, so no fall can happen. Use this wherever the task allows.
  • Restrained fall — the worker can reach the edge, but any fall is limited to a short distance.
  • Fall arrest — stops a fall that has already started, using a full-body harness with an energy-absorbing lanyard or a self-retracting lanyard. Check there is enough clearance below for the lanyard to deploy.

Your risk assessment and safe work method statement (SWMS) decide which technique applies.

Anchors and connectors

A fall-arrest system is only as strong as its anchor. We stock anchor slings such as the Skylotec Loop 35 kN Anchor Sling, beam anchors such as the 3M DBI-SALA Large Sliding Beam Anchor, and locking karabiners such as the Skylotec Oval Steel TRI 30 kN. Anchor ratings depend on the technique and how many people are attached — AS/NZS 1891.4 sets the requirements, and fixed anchors should be installed and certified by a competent person.

Inspection and replacement

Check your harness, lanyard and connectors before every use, and have them inspected by a competent person at the intervals AS/NZS 1891.4 sets. Take any equipment that has arrested a fall out of service immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Total restraint stops a worker reaching the edge, so no fall can happen. Restrained fall lets the worker reach the edge but limits any fall. Fall arrest stops a fall already in progress using a full-body harness and an energy-absorbing or self-retracting lanyard.

It depends on the technique and how many people are attached to the anchor. AS/NZS 1891.4 sets the requirements, and fixed anchors should be installed and certified by a competent person. Check the rating on each anchor sling or connector listing.

No. A hard hat lanyard or tether is a short cord that stops your hard hat falling while you work at height. A fall-arrest lanyard connects your harness to an anchor and is rated to stop a fall.

Hanging motionless in a harness after a fall can quickly become dangerous, so anyone working in a harness needs a plan to rescue them promptly. Rescue kits, davits and stretchers help teams carry out that plan.

Check it yourself before every use and have it inspected by a competent person at the intervals set out in AS/NZS 1891.4. Remove any harness or lanyard that has arrested a fall from service immediately.
