A taped hi-vis shirt under a plain jacket is a hi-vis shirt nobody can see — so when the weather turns, the garment going over the top is what has to carry the AS/NZS 4602.1 rating and the retroreflective taping to AS/NZS 1906.4. Jacket or Vest?

• Vests — the quickest way to make an existing outfit compliant, and the easiest thing to keep in a vehicle for site visits. No warmth and no weather protection.
• Softshell and fleece jackets — wind resistant and warm without the bulk. The day-to-day cold-weather layer on most sites.
• Waterproof jackets — for sustained rain. Check that the seams are taped, not just the fabric coated; an untaped seam is where water gets in first.
• Puffer and quilted jackets — warmest, for cold starts, night shift and cold storage.
