What the sign colours and shapes mean (AS 1319)
-
Danger — the word DANGER in a red oval inside a black rectangle, for hazards likely to be life-threatening: Danger High Voltage, Danger Confined Space Entry By Permit Only, Danger Asbestos Removal In Progress.
-
Warning — a black symbol on yellow inside a black triangle, for hazards not likely to be life-threatening: Beware Of Moving Parts, Forklifts In Use, Watch Out For Pedestrians.
-
Mandatory — a white symbol on a blue circle, for instructions that must be followed: Hard Hat Area, Hi Visibility Clothing Or Vest Must Be Worn, This Protective Equipment Must Be Worn On This Site.
-
Prohibition — a red circle and slash over a black symbol, for actions that are not allowed: No Smoking.
-
Emergency information — white on green, for exits, first aid and assembly points: Exit Sign, First Aid, Emergency Assembly Point.
-
Fire — white on red, for the location of fire equipment: Fire Extinguisher.
Signs such as “Smoking Area” are general information signs — useful, but not covered by AS 1319.
Construction site signs
Builders usually start with access control and site rules at every entry point: Danger Construction Site Unauthorised Persons Keep Out, All Visitors Must Report to Site Office and a multi-condition PPE sign. Add hazard signs as the job needs them — high voltage, confined space and asbestos removal. Your site’s hazards and safety plan set the final list.
Choosing a sign material
-
Metal — 0.6 mm steel with rounded corners and four mounting holes, for long-term outdoor use.
-
Polypropylene — 1.4 mm, UV stable and lighter than metal; suits most indoor and outdoor locations.
-
Corflute — 3 mm corrugated plastic for temporary jobs such as construction sites; tie it to fencing.
-
Self-adhesive vinyl — stick-on signs and labels for switchboards, machines and equipment.
-
Glow-in-the-dark — Brady’s luminous material for exit and evacuation signs indoors.
Each listing shows its material and size, so check them before ordering for a particular spot.
Labels and tags
For chemical storage and transport, choose dangerous goods placards (250 × 250 mm) or rolls of 1,000 small labels such as Flammable Liquid 3. Electrical test and tag work uses Brady appliance test tags, and electrical rooms often display the Electrical Shock Survival Sign. Lockout tags are in our lockout tagout range.
